How to Request Letters of Authority

To receive your letter after a hearing:

Once a Judge appoints a Guardian, Conservator, or Personal Representative, that person must accept the appointment by filing an Acceptance of Appointment - PC571 and the Addendum to Protected Personal Identifying Information MC97a within 15 days of the appointment.

For updated Letters, follow these instructions:

Conservatorship/Decedent Cases

  1. If your Annual Account (CA/CY case) or Notice of Continued Administration (DE case) is due, the court must first receive and process that filing before issuing updated Letters. You may submit by mail, email, or fax, or drop box on 13th floor. Please review the status of your filing by going to (opens in new window)Case Access..
  2. To request updated letters of authority at the same time you are filing a document, please follow these instructions:
    1. If submitted via fax:
      1. Include a cover sheet requesting an updated letter of authority along with your document being submitted for filing.
    2. If submitted via Email:
      1. Include in a cover sheet requesting an updated letter of authority along with your document being submitted for filing as one .pdf attachment. Please do not make the request within the body of your email.
    3. If submitted via mail:
      1. Include the payment along with the filing in the envelope..
    4. If submitted via drop box:
      1. i. Include payment along with filing and request for update letter and place inside the manila envelopes which are provided near drop box.
  3. To request additional copies of the letters of authority on DE/DA/CA/CY cases, email: probateservice@wcpc.us to request the fee be added to your case.

    2. Pay the $12 fee per Letters online using ePayment. E-Payment Instructions
    3. Once paid, a clerk will email the certified letter of authority to the fiduciary (or their attorney of record). If no email address is available, the certified copy will be mailed out.

Guardianship Cases

  1. Effective 11/10/2022, at the time the Annual Report of Guardian (case types GM, GA, LG, GL) is accepted for filing, an updated letter of guardianship will be created.
    1. Please check the online case access to pay fees to receive your updated certified letter.
    2. Pay the $12 fee per Letters online using ePayment. E-Payment Instructions

  3. If you send your Annual Report of Guardian, by regular U.S. mail, you may include a check or money order payable to Wayne County Probate Court for updated Letters and they will be mailed back to you or emailed to you if you provide an email address.
